Ignite WordCamp

ignite_logowcWe’ve said all along WordCamp Boston will be different, so we’re excited to announce the very first Ignite WordCamp! Most WordCamps have integrated some lightning talks, but we wanted to take it one step further.

“I think it’s a great idea to integrate Ignite presentations into your Wordcamp, and we’re happy to help you have a great event” – Mary Rotman, O’Reilly

Saturday afternoon, we’ll host Ignite WordCamp in front of the entire WordCamp Boston audience. There will be additional surprises and contests, as well. For those not familiar with the Ignite format, each presenter will be alloted 5 minutes on the nose for their presentation. Their 20 slides will auto-advance every 15 seconds, outside of their control. This is in the pecha kucha tradition.

A BIG thank you to Rackspace for sponsoring Ignite WordCamp.

Who are the presenters?

Here in speaking order are all the talks at the inaugural Ignite WordCamp!

Chris Beaman – WordPress as a CMS solution for local service providers

Wordpress has the potential to become THE content management system for small businesses, specifically local service providers (laborers, restaurants, etc.). Imagine a platform where, a restaurant for example, could build their own dynamic website, including plugins featuring online ordering through Foodler, maps from Google and reviews through Yelp. It would be an innovative and inexpensive way to offer more local businesses an opportunity to create an interactive, manageable web presence.

Danielle Morrill – Getting the Money Shot: Making Screencasts Without Going Insane

Producing a useful screencast, where an online product or service is demonstrated for the user and they are introduced to the UI of your website, can increase the number of people who convert to customers. This talk will leave viewers with practical advise for creating their own screencast, including a list of tools and resources. It will also outline some of the things to avoid, the pyschology of the editor, and how thinking like a porn director will help you be sure to achieve the “money shot”. Take 1 Mac, 1 Flipcam HD, a whole lot of coffee, and one really sleep deprived Danielle and hilarity ensues.

Eric Buth – “Yo dawg, I heard you like publishing platforms…”

Originally described in 4-year-old post on the Daily WTF, the “inner-platform effect” was extremely well captured by the Xzibit “Yo Dawg” meme of this past year. The WordPress community (and really all developers) are constantly struggling with Pimp-My-Ride-type over integration problems. This is a 5 minute intervention for the plugin writers and platform builders among us.
